NEW YORK — Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis and Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello were suspended for five games each and fined by Major League Baseball on Wednesday, a day after their brawl at Fenway Park.
Youkilis began his suspension immediately, while Porcello appealed, delaying any penalty until the process is complete.
“I don’t have any regrets,” said You- kilis, who leads the Red Sox in getting hit by pitches with 10. “There comes a point in your life when you can only take so much.”
MLB vice president Bob Watson cited Youkilis for charging the mound, throwing his helmet at Porcello and inciting Tuesday night’s bench-clearing tussle. Porcello was penalized for intentionally throwing pitches at Victor Martinez and Youkilis. In addition, Detroit pitcher Edwin Jackson was fined for what Watson said were aggressive actions.
• Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga missed his start against Boston because of what a team spokesman said was a “severe sore throat.”
