The Obama administration on Thursday filed a notice in Denver’s 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals preserving the government’s right to join environmental groups challenging a federal judge’s decision on roadless areas.
Environmental groups have appealed a Wyoming federal judge’s ruling against enforcement of a 2001 national rule for protecting some 58.5 million acres of relatively untrammeled national forest land.
Thursday’s filing is seen as a possible signal that the Obama administration favors a national rule.
Colorado officials are developing their own rule for managing 4,184,000 acres, and say they plan to proceed regardless of the Obama administration’s actions.
