A man in the custody of Denver police committed suicide Thursday night on the front porch of his home near West 44th Avenue and Yates Street.

The man, who has not been identified, had his hands cuffed in front of him because he told officers he had an injury, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

As officers waited for a search warrant for his home, the man grabbed a glass plant-watering globe, which had a long, thin reed, and stabbed himself in the neck, Jackson said. He was rushed to a hospital but died.
