ASPEN, Colo.—Pitkin County voters could get a chance to vote on a program offering low-interest loans to help families and businesses finance renewable energy projects and improve energy efficiency.

The county commissioners have given preliminary approval to placing the proposal on the November ballot. The county would issue $5 million in bonds to finance the loans.

The commissioners will take a final vote Aug. 26 on putting the measure on the ballot.

A law approved last year allows counties to create local improvement districts to issue bonds to spur energy-efficiency measures.

Pitkin County Energy Program director Dylan Hoffman says it would make sense to model the program after one in Boulder County, which emphasizes improvements to homes over new renewable energy projects.
