DENVER—A man accused of using an assault-style rifle to shoot and kill a man in an alley is an Iraq War veteran who earned a Purple Heart.

Twenty-six-year-old Charles Garlick of Morrison faces a first-degree murder charge in the Aug. 5 death of 48-year-old Charles Foos. Garlick is scheduled to be in Denver District Court Friday morning.

The Denver Post reports that Garlick served in the U.S. Army from March 2003 until February 2006, including in Kuwait and Iraq in 2004 and 2005. The paper reported that Garlick received his Purple Heart after being wounded by mortar fire.

Police say Foos was shot with an AR-15 rifle, the civilian version of the military’s M-16 rifle.
