More Americans filed for personal bankruptcy in July than any month since 2005, when a one-time rush skewed the numbers.
The tough job market led to more than 126,000 consumer bankruptcy cases in July, up 34 percent from the prior year, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute.
That means filings through the first 30 weeks of this year are catching up to the pace of 2005. That was the year the government enacted new restrictions, intending to make it more difficult to file for bankruptcy.
