More than 75,000 students head back to their classrooms today in Denver Public Schools, the state’s second-largest district.

This year, the district is opening several new charter schools, a teacher-led school and an arts magnet school in southwest Denver. Several schools are being combined in shared campuses for the first time.

This morning, Superintendent Tom Boasberg welcomed in the new school year at Steadman Elementary and was joined by Gov. Bill Ritter and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.

The city of Denver on Tuesday unveiled flashing school-zone beacons at 10 schools. When work is complete, 32 schools will have beacons to warn drivers that children may be present.

“This is a great partnership between DPS and the city to enhance safety around our schools,” Boasberg said.
