GREELEY, Colo.—A longtime Greeley animal control officer has been fired after complaints that authorities waited weeks before checking reports of problems at a house where 102 pets were found.

A neighbor and real estate agent say they contacted the city weeks before the house was searched and the animals, including dogs and cats, were removed July 31. Nearly 30 dead cats were found in a freezer.

Thirty-eight-year-old Timothy Erin Olofson, who lived in the house, has been cited for 220 alleged violations.

Greeley Police Chief Jerry Garner says an animal control officer was fired for mishandling the case. He says the officer didn’t take action when the problem was first reported July 7.

Garner says he can’t release the officer’s name because it’s a personnel matter.
