BOULDER, Colo.—Environmental and wildlife officials are trying to figure out what killed hundreds of fish in a stretch of Boulder Creek, but say it’s not a danger to people or their pets.

About 200 fish have died over the past two days after a spill of an unknown substance. Officials don’t think it was a chemical spill. They think it was a fine sediment, which reduced the oxygen in the water.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife says the problem appears to be isolated to a few hundred yards. Most of the dead fish are brown trout, along with some white suckers.
