DENVER—A man who pleaded guilty to killing two people by firing a gun in the air to celebrate the new year has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Pedro Cortez was sentenced Friday in the deaths of 11-year-old Angelica Martinez of Denver and her 47-year-old aunt, Rebecca Yanez of Fort Collins. He faced a maximum sentence of 24 years.

The girl and her aunt were sitting inside a Denver home when a single bullet tore through a wall and struck them at about 12:20 a.m. on New Year’s Day 2008. Cortez said he was aiming at a streetlight.

Cortez pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter.
