SILVERTHORNE, Colo.—The U.S. Forest Service has proposed logging about 4,000 acres north of Silverthorne to remove pine trees infested with bark beetles.
The agency has completed an environmental assessment on the project. Forest Service officials say they want to reduce the risk of wildfires by removing dead and dying trees and help set the stage for regeneration of the area.
The forests in Summit County have been hit hard by the bark-beetle epidemic. The Forest Service estimates the infestation has spread to about 2 million acres in Colorado.
Forest officials are taking public comments on the environmental review of the proposed logging.
