Injured outfielder Carlos Gonzalez found a way to contribute for the Rockies on Wednesday. He lent his bat to Ryan Spilborghs, who bashed a Randy Wolf pitch into the left-field bleachers for a third-inning home run.
Speed trap.
For the second consecutive game, speedy Eric Young Jr. was his own worst enemy. The rookie led off the first inning with a single but then got caught between first and second, fooled by Wolf’s motion. Young singled Tuesday for his first big-league hit, only to get picked off at first.
Rusty hitter.
When Juan Rincon came to the plate in the fifth inning and grounded out to the pitcher, it was his first at-bat since June 16, 2004, at Montreal when he was pitching for the Twins. Rincon fared better on the mound, pitching four hitless innings. The four innings were his most work since July 27, 2003, pitching for the Twins at Cleveland.
