The Rockies’ pocketbooks will likely take a hit, but there won’t be any suspensions in the wake of Monday night’s postgame run-in between several players and the umpiring crew.
Major League Baseball’s director of on-field operations, Bob Watson, assured Rockies manager Jim Tracy today that no Rockies face suspension.
“I don’t think there will be suspensions on either side,” Tracy said. “Quite frankly, I was extremely pleased to hear that, because I think this is something that you have the conversation (about) and then you put it behind you.”
Asked if there will be any fines handed down to either Rockies players or any umpires, Tracy dodged the question, saying, “I really can’t get into that. There is a player of mine that I need to sit and talk with. So I don’t want to blabber to you guys first without sitting down and talking with that player.”
After Monday night’s dramatic 14-inning, 6-4 victory over the Giants, several Rockies alleged that second-base umpire Bill Miller called catcher Yorvit Torrealba a derogatory name while the catcher was a baserunner late in the game. Tempers were already on edge because both the Rockies and Giants complained about the ball-and-strike calls of home-plate umpire Angel Campos.
Torrealba, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, closer Huston Street and pitching coach Bob Apodaca all had angry words with members of the crew at game’s end.
On Tuesday, Watson told the Denver Post that punishments for umpires and players would be handed out. With no suspensions in the works, fines are likely.
“We are investigating this, and it’s not all against the umpires, it involves players as well,” Watson said. “And it is definitely not going away without discipline being handed down, on both sides.”
