Steve Ziegler of Broomfield survived the first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur golf championship Wednesday by defeating Florida’s Jackson Beindorf 5 and 3 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Ziegler, a junior at Stanford and a former two-time Colorado high school champion from Legacy, advanced to today’s round of 32, where he’ll face Will Strickler of Gainesville, Fla., who was the No. 3 seed after Tuesday’s stroke play.
University of Colorado senior Justin Bardgett was one of four golfers to survive a 27-man playoff Wednesday morning to qualify for match play. Bardgett then was eliminated by Mark Anderson of Beaufort, S.C., 2 up.
Also, 50-year-old stroke play medalist Tim Jackson of Tennessee beat Arizona’s John Kostis, the son of TV analyst Peter Kostis, 5 and 4.
The second and third rounds will be played today. The 36-hole final is Sunday.
Eaton leads women’s stroke play.
Kim Eaton of Riverdale Golf Club, in her first year of eligibility as a senior, shot a first-round 1-over 74 at Highlands Ranch Golf Club to lead the Colorado Women’s Golf Association Senior Stroke Play Championship.
Eaton has a one-shot lead over D’Ann Kimbrel of Broken Tee, who also is a senior rookie. Defending champion Lynn Zmistowski of Country Club Castle Pines trail by four shots at 78.
CU, CSU golfers square off for Cup.
The Colorado and Colorado State men’s golf teams will face each other in the season-opening and inaugural State of Colorado Cup on Sunday at Ballyneal Golf and Hunt Club near Holyoke. CSU finished last season ranked No. 29 by Golfweek, and CU was No. 42, but the two teams didn’t compete against each other.
Adams State running teams ranked No. 1.
The Adams State men’s and women’s cross country teams were ranked No. 1 in the national U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason polls. The Western State men were tabbed No. 2, and the women’s team was picked No. 5.
Zamansky wins super-G event.
Former Aspen resident Jake Zamansky won the super-G at the first New Zealand Winter Games despite wind gusts in excess of 50 mph on Coronet Peak, where the U.S. men’s alpine team has been training for a week.
Zamansky’s time of 1 minute, 3.26 seconds beat Felix Neureuther of Germany by 0.38 seconds.
Canadian Britt Janyk beat Marie Pietilae-Holmner of Sweden for the women’s super-G crown. The American women’s team returned to the United States last week to prepare for a September training camp in Chile.
• Gretchen Bleiler of Aspen used a frontside air, backside 540, frontside 540, cab 720, to straight air to finish third in the halfpipe at the first World Cup snowboarding event, in Cardrona, New Zealand. Jiayu Liu of China took first, and Kelly Clark of Vermont was second. Olympic stalwart Shaun White won the men’s halfpipe.
