NUCLA — Firefighters are working to contain a lightning-sparked fire on 900 acres in western Colorado about 10 miles north of Nucla.

The fire began Saturday afternoon and was burning in piñon, juniper and oak. Firefighters had no estimate Sunday of containment.

Interagency fire officials say a seasonal cabin about a quarter-mile from the fire is threatened. Two bulldozers, three engines and 14 smokejumpers are among crews working to suppress the fire and build containment lines to protect the cabin and other property, but the fire is being allowed to burn in areas where it could benefit wildlife habitat and vegetation.
