EAGLE, Colo.—A commercial flight has touched down at the Eagle County Regional Airport for the first time since April.

People on a flight from Chicago were greeted Tuesday with cookies, hats and a serenade of “Fly Me to the Moon.” It was a celebration of improvements intended to open the airport to more, diverse flights.

Work lengthening the runway is nearly complete after two summers of construction.

The expansion will allow jets that use the airport to take off with full loads of fuel and passengers in the summer. That’s intended to put the airport in range of farther-flung destinations.

The longer runway could also potentially allow international flights in the winter. But airport officials don’t expect that to happen soon because of the cost of adding a customs and immigration center.
