SEATTLE — Ken Griffey Jr. is having an MRI and visiting a doctor to find out why his surgically repaired knee still hurts.

Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said before Tuesday’s game against the Angels that Griffey has been having pain in a new place in his left knee. He hasn’t played since last Thursday. Griffey, 39, had arthroscopic knee surgery in October.

Wakamatsu said Griffey, baseball’s active leader with 625 home runs, likely will not play until Thursday in Oakland at the earliest. Griffey is batting .221, with 14 home runs and 43 RBIs, in 95 games.

• The Mariners activated Gold Glove third baseman Adrian Beltre from the 15-day disabled list.

Boone back with Houston.

Aaron Boone returned to the major leagues, rejoining the Astros just five months after having open-heart surgery.

“It’s good to be in this position and back here after all that has gone through in my life this year,” Boone said. The 36-year-old third baseman was activated off the DL for a game against the Cubs.

Start time switched.

ESPN and Major League Baseball agreed to switch the starting time of a Yankees- Red Sox game to avoid conflicting with Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

The Sept. 27 game was returning to its original start time of 11 a.m. MDT. It had been changed to 6 p.m. to accommodate ESPN’s schedule; Yom Kippur, a day of fasting and atonement, begins at sundown that evening.
