The Colorado State volleyball team won its own Hilton Classic in Fort Collins with a 3-0 tournament record after dispatching Texas-Arlington 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-18) on Saturday.
Redshirt freshman Brieon Paige played in her first collegiate match and had eight kills and four assisted blocks, earning plaudits from coach Tom Hilbert.
“She attacked the ball well, and she should get more time coming up,” he said.
Setter Evan Saunders had 36 assists and spread the ball around, helping outside hitters Danielle Minch and Jacque Davisson to 11 kills each. CSU (4-2) plays at Duke on Wednesday, then Marshall, Tennessee and host North Carolina in the Carolina Classic next weekend.
• Caroline Kurtz had 16 kills and hit .429 — and had two service aces and 19 digs — in leading Air Force to a 3-2 (19-25, 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 15-8) win over Southern Utah in the first match at the Denver Invitational. The Falcons were swept by Eastern Illinois in their second match 25-22, 25-20, 26-24.
The host Pioneers swept Eastern Illinois 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-16) behind 18 kills from Emmy Davidsmeyer.
Davidsmeyer dominated in the tournament finale, recording 26 kills on a .489 hitting percentage as DU beat West Virginia 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 25-14, 19-25, 15-6). Jordan Raines added 16 kills and 17 digs.
Durango’s Wells gets top 10 at world cycling.
Todd Wells of Durango placed eighth in the men’s elite cross country 45-kilometer race at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Canberra, Australia.
Heather Irminger of Boulder was 10th in the women’s cross country race.
