Most people know Glenwood Springs as a mineral springs mecca, but this time each year it becomes polo central as teams compete for the coveted Devereux Cup.
Named for Walter Devereux, founder of the historic Hotel Colorado, the round-robin matches are played in late August at Stout Ranch on Baldy Creek and draw over 1,000 spectators. The weekend’s festivities begin with a meet-the-players party and auction that benefits Childhelp River Bridge Center and its work on behalf of abused and neglected children.
Devereux and his partner, Hervey Lyle, both championship polo players, introduced the sport to the Grand Valley around the turn of the century by forming the Glenwood Polo and Racing Association and building a polo field for Hotel Colorado guests to enjoy. The team won the world polo championships in 1903, 1904 and 1912.
The Devereux Cup was established six years ago, and was won again this year by Team Hotel Colorado whose members are Selby and Gary Stout and Michelle and Craig Huber.

After a busy day selling homes, trading stocks, negotiating the retail scene and putting out press releases, one group of Denver-area young professionals didn’t just repair to a popular watering hole to relax. The reason they were at LoDo’s Oak Tavern Sept. 2 was to hop on the ticket-selling bandwagon for Western Fantasy, the Oct. 17 Kenny Rogers concert, dinner and auction benefiting Volunteers of America. There’s a discounted price for all of Rogers’ 20- and 30-something fans; learn more by calling Heather Spencer or Michael James at 303-297-0408.
