NORMAN, Okla. — In the wake of Saturday’s devastating loss to BYU — in which Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Sam Bradford was lost to a shoulder injury — Oklahoma received more bad news Tuesday.
Coach Bob Stoops said surgeons determined tight end Jermaine Gresham needed stitches to repair cartilage to his right knee, and he will require about five months to recover.
That will put him out for the rest of Oklahoma’s season.
Gresham was Oklahoma’s top returning receiver with 66 catches for 950 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. He needed only five more TDs to tie the school’s career record of 31 set by Mark Clayton.
Florida’s Debose out for season
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators will have to wait a year to see highly touted freshman Andre Debose on the field.
Debose, a speedster expected to serve as Percy Harvin’s replacement this fall at receiver, will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn hamstring.
Team doctors initially thought it was just a pulled muscle, but tests later revealed a partial tear.
“He wanted to really play, really crushed,” coach Urban Meyer said. “But he understands that this is a marathon, not a sprint.”
Notre Dame fullback sidelined
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame fullback James Aldridge will miss Saturday’s game against Michigan with a sprained right shoulder.
Coach Charlie Weis said Aldridge will be questionable to doubtful for the following week’s game against Michigan State. Tailback Robert Hughes will start in Aldridge’s absence.
Footnotes.
Flu-like symptoms have hit at least a dozen Mississippi players, even sacking quarterback Jevan Snead. The No. 6 Rebels have an open date this week.
• At least 10 Wisconsin players have flu-like symptoms, and coach Bret Bielema kept his players from attending a usual media availability to limit their exposure.
• Washington State will pay $300,000 for canceling its 2011 game at Hawaii.
