It’s a very large late fee. Several drivers have discovered that if you don’t pay your bill on time, there is a $70 penalty.
It’s happening to people who don’t have a pre-paid account to pay the $2.50 toll on E-470.
The E-470 Public Highway Authority sends a monthly bill to anyone who isn’t an ExpressToll customer. A camera takes a picture of those driver’s license plates and they receive a bill for the toll.
The $70 penalty comes if that bill isn’t paid on time.
“I think it’s outrageous! It’s just taking advantage of the people of Colorado,” Richard Rogers, an E-470 driver, said.
The E-470 Public Highway Authority took down its toll booths and went cashless as of July 4. At the time, a spokesperson for the authority said the idea was to make the drive easier and faster.
E-470 gives drivers 30 days to pay their bills. After that they receive a toll violation notice. That tacks on $7 to each charge. Drivers are then given one more month before the really big penalty comes.
“It’s only when the customer receives a second, what we call a ‘final toll violation notice,’ is the $70 civil penalty given to the customer,” E-470/Director of Operations Dave Kristick said.
