It’s hard to figure, chartered air travel being what it is, upscale hotels being what they are and alarm clocks being available in each and every state in the union.
But when the Broncos’ young men go east, what happens is pretty much a 50-50 split.
In Mike Shanahan’s 14-year tenure as head coach, the Broncos were 22-21 in all games played in the Eastern time zone. The best was a 3-0 mark in 2006, the worst a 1-3 showing in 1999.
Last season, in a collapse to 8-8 that got Shanahan fired, the team was 3-2 in the East.
The percentages are roughly the same when kickoff is 1 p.m. in the Eastern time zone (11 a.m. on their Mountain time bodies). Since the start of the 2002 season, the Broncos are 3-4 in the early kickoff games in the East, 1-0 last season.
What’s it all mean? It’s difficult to say, but the Broncos did try moving up some of their practice times this week and started their meetings a little earlier to try and get the players somewhat acclimated to the idea of the early start.
They better figure out something, since they are currently scheduled to play five road games that will kick off at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
