The consolation in Sunday’s loss was rest. The Rockies did not have to use setup man Rafael Betancourt or closer Franklin Morales, both of whom needed a breather. Morales wore ice on his shoulder Sunday. He is not hurt, just a bit tired after appearing in six of the past 10 games. Betancourt has pitched in seven of the past 10 games.

The Rockies struck out 13 times Sunday and 30 times in the series. The inability to make consistent contact remains a concern.

San Diego has taken a liking to the spoiler role. The Padres won their sixth consecutive series, including triumphs over the Rockies, Giants, Braves and Marlins.
