BOULDER — After two weeks in which the Colorado defense has allowed a total of 1,000 yards, 77 points and nine touchdowns to Colorado State and Toledo, Buffs coach Dan Hawkins says some things will change on that side of the ball. But they won’t be major fixes.
“You’ve just got to clean a couple of things up,” Hawkins said. “You can’t make wholesale change.”
The Buffs rank 111th in the nation in total defense and have allowed nearly 8 yards per play.
“There were some gashers on defense,” Hawkins said. “But you take a couple of things and clean it up and it becomes different there.”
Cody to play.
Quarterback Cody Hawkins didn’t practice Sunday, but he expects to be ready to play Saturday against Wyoming.
“I feel good,” Hawkins said. “Probably in a little bit more pain than I’ve been since I’ve been here. But I’m feeling good, and I’ll be ready to go by Saturday.”
Hawkins suffered a mild concussion diving for a touchdown late in the loss at Toledo on Friday night. He said he still doesn’t remember the play, and at the time he didn’t remember a handful of plays that preceded it until he got to the team bus more than an hour after the game. He plans on practicing Tuesday.
“Quarterbacks are noncontact in practice for us anyway,” he said. “If I were a running back, it’d be a little bit different deal. But I’ll be going by Tuesday. I’m just trying to take it easy and rest up and not do a whole bunch of physical activity until then.”
Staying positive.
CU coach Dan Hawkins said he hasn’t had to work hard to keep the team’s spirits up despite the 0-2 start.
“Our guys have got a good attitude. I love our guys,” Hawkins said. “They’re battling, and I think we’re right there. We’re not where we want to be wins and losses, but I think we’re finding ourselves offensively. I think we’re doing a good job in special teams. We’ve got to clean up a couple of things defense-wise, iron that out. But I like our guys. They bring it every day.”
