LINCOLN, Neb.—Get ready, turkey hunters. It’s going to be a long season.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is reminding those hunters used to an October opening that the fall season this year begins on Tuesday.

Holders of fall turkey hunting permits can go after gobblers with either a shotgun or bow until Dec. 31.

The season will not be suspended in November, which marks the firearm deer season. But turkey hunters must wear at least 400 square inches of hunter orange on their head, chest and back during deer season.

In 2008, more than 11,300 turkey permits were sold, and about 8,800 birds were taken. Those numbers are expected to increase because of the longer season.
