Martin Wolman, who worked his way from copy boy to publisher of the Wisconsin State Journal, died Saturday in a Boulder nursing home.

He was 90 years old.

Wolman’s son, Lewis Wolman, of Boulder, said his father died Saturday on what would have been his 66th wedding anniversary. He moved to Colorado for four years to be closer to family.

Wolman’s son Jonathan was editorial page editor of The Denver Post from 2004 to 2007 and is now the editor and publisher of The Detroit News.

Martin Wolman began his newspaper career as a copy boy in 1932 — before graduating from high school, according to Lewis Wolman. Though he took some college courses he never earned a degree.

He moved up to reporter, business manager, general manager and publisher. “He worked at one place and one place only,” Lewis Wolman said.

Wolman, known as “Murphy,” died on what would have been his 66th anniversary, his son, Jonathan said. “He was a wonderful, community oriented publisher and a wonderful community oriented family man,” Jonathan Wolman said.

His wife, Anne, died in 2004. Funeral services are planned for Wednesday in Madison.
