Q: For some reason, I think the Saints would be all over Peyton Hillis if he became available. What are the chances that Hillis will be shopped for help at some (other) position?
A: The Saints, like a lot of teams, would likely be interested in a multifaceted player like Hillis.
But that said, the Broncos are very interested in having a player like Hillis on their roster as well. So I can’t imagine they would move him anywhere unless they got an offer they simply couldn’t turn away.
That’s because Hillis already plays running back and fullback and returns kickoffs for the Broncos. He also could return punts in a pinch and could play tight end or H-back without too much difficulty.
Add on a steady diet of special-teams capabilities, and that’s the kind of versatile player Josh McDaniels has said he wants in several spots on the roster.
Sunday, Hillis played some at fullback, carried the ball one time for 2 yards and caught a pass for 6 yards. He also was in on three special-teams tackles, including two solos.
Hillis is the only back on the current 53-man roster who was on the field for every practice in the preseason, so that kind of durability in a group of running backs that has already had some injury troubles is yet another reason he is difficult to replace.
He briefly limped off the field Sunday but returned to finish out the game.
