INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis promised its new defense would be better this season.

On Sunday, the Colts delivered.

Peyton Manning threw for one touchdown, Joseph Addai ran for another and the Colts defense stopped Jacksonville twice in the fourth quarter to preserve a 14-12 win Sunday.

Manning tied Johnny Unitas’ franchise record for career wins with 118.

“I’ve never felt comfortable with comparisons with him. I think he’s kind of in his own category,” Manning said. “But I am proud of those wins.”

Manning lost receiver Anthony Gonzalez late in the first quarter with a right knee injury, a potentially serious blow to the Colts’ usually high-scoring offense. Gonzalez did not return.

Reggie Wayne finished with 10 catches for 162 yards and a TD, and Colts coach Jim Caldwell won his NFL head coaching debut.

Manning finished 28-of-38 for 301 yards.

The Jags’ Maurice Jones-Drew rushed 21 times for 97 yards and scored Jacksonville’s only TD and caught five passes for 26 yards.

Jaguars quarterback David Garrard was 14-of-28 for 122 yards.
