MARQUETTE, Mich. — The family of short-track speedskater J.R. Celski, injured in a crash at the U.S. nationals, is “very optimistic” about a full recovery that will allow him to train for the Vancouver Olympics.
U.S. Speedskating executive director Bob Crowley said in a statement Sunday that he spoke to Cel- ski’s family, which was at a hospital where the skater had surgery on his left leg after crashing in the 500-meter semifinals Saturday.
The 19-year-old skater from Federal Way, Wash., finished second behind Apolo Anton Ohno in the overall point standings, enough to qualify him for his first Olympics.
Zabriskie takes Missouri
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — American David Zabriskie won the Tour of Missouri, finishing with the main pack of the final stage through the streets of downtown Kansas City.
Zabriskie entered the final stage 30 seconds ahead of Gustav Larsson and was never threatened, shielded by his Garmin-Slipstream teammates through the 71.4-mile final stage.
• Damian Cunego of Italy won the 14th stage of the Spanish Vuelta, and Alejandro Valverde added to his overall lead by finishing fifth in La Pandera, Spain.
