Freshman forward Alex Tarnoczi scored two goals and sophomore midfielder Matt Kirby added three assists to lead the University of Denver men’s soccer team to a 6-1 victory over visiting Belmont on Sunday.

After Belmont (0-3-1) tied the game in the 15th minute, Denver (2-2-0) responded with Jarod Stigall’s game-winner in the 23rd minute, with an assist by Kirby.

Canadian takes title.

No. 1 seed Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton, Alberta, won the International Racquetball Tour’s World Championship on Sunday in Denver. Waselenchuk topped third-seeded Jack Huczek of Dallas 11-3, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9 in the championship match at an outdoor court in Skyline Park.

Eaton, Bryniarski advance to match play.

Kim Eaton of Greeley fell to fourth place after a second- round 77 in the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur at Cascades Course in Hot Springs, Va. Eaton finished stroke play at 149, seven strokes behind Joan Wiggins of California. Wiggins will be the top seed when match play starts today. Durango’s Cindy Bryniarski, who shot 153, also qualified for today’s match-play round.

• Aurora’s Roger Gunderson (147) and Colorado Springs’ John Olive (149) were among the match-play round qualifiers after stroke play in the USGA Senior Men’s Amateur at the Beverly Country Club in Chicago.

Buffs fall to Gators.

The No. 14 Florida women’s soccer team scored in the 41st minute, then just after halftime en route to a 3-1 victory over No. 20 Colorado in Gainesville, Fla. Erika Tymrak scored the game-winner for the Gators (5-2) in the 48th minute. Colorado (4-3) got a goal from Kate Russell in the 80th.

CC women tie ranked Jayhawks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Hulyo earned a second consecutive shutout as the Colorado College women’s soccer team played to a scoreless tie with No. 13 Kansas in the CC Invitational in Colorado Springs.

Also, Lizzy Carlson and Kelli Breidenbach each scored a goal and added an assist as Denver got a 3-2 win over Texas Christian.

Smith’s streak ends.

Regan Smith, who drives for Denver-based Furniture Row Racing, had his 53-race finishing streak snapped late Saturday in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Richmond, Va.

Smith, 25, got a flat tire on lap 206 of 400 and crashed into the wall, forcing him to retire early in 40th place. The crashless streak had spanned Smith’s entire three-year NASCAR career.

“Sooner or later, something like this was going to happen,” he said.
