Martin Wolman, who worked his way up from copy boy to publisher of the Wisconsin State Journal, died Saturday in a Boulder nursing home. He was 90.

Wolman’s son Lewis Wolman of Boulder said his father died on what would have been his 66th wedding anniversary. His wife, Anne, died in 2004. He moved to Colorado for four years to be closer to family.

Wolman’s son Jonathan was editorial page editor of The Denver Post from 2004 to 2007 and is now the editor and publisher of The Detroit News.

Wolman began his newspaper career when he went to work for the State Journal as a copy boy in 1932 — before he graduated from high school, said Lewis Wolman. Though he took some college courses, he never earned a degree.

He later became a reporter, business manager, general manager and publisher.

“He worked at one place and one place only,” Lewis Wolman said.

“He was a wonderful, community-oriented publisher and a wonderful community-oriented family man,” said Jonathan Wolman.

Funeral services are planned for Wednesday in Madison, Wis.
