With hundreds of ground and air searchers looking for them, a Fort Carson soldier and his girlfriend — who were missing since Saturday — walked out of the Pike National Forest into the town of Jefferson at about 4 p.m. Monday.
“They’re being evaluated right now, but they appear to be OK,” Jim Shires, a spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities were notified Sunday after the 26-year-old soldier, Chadwick Knight, and his 19-year-old girlfriend, Xenia Holzknecht from Colorado Springs, did not return home Saturday night.
The pair walked out than 20 miles from the Goose Creek Trailhead, where they had parked their car.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jacki Kelley says they were found after they made their way to a small store. She said they apparently walked 15 to 20 miles to come out the other side of Kenosha Pass.
“They walked in and they’re cold and they’re tired, we’re just so excited that this is the outcome that we’ve had,” she said.
