SALT LAKE CITY—A Utah mother and daughter have been sentenced to probation in a sweeping federal investigation into the theft and illegal trafficking of American Indian artifacts.
U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups on Wednesday showed leniency in sentencing Jeanne (JEAN’-nee) Redd to three years probation and a $2,000 fine and Jericca Redd to two years probation.
The women, of Blanding, are the first of 26 defendants to throw themselves at the mercy of a federal court in Salt Lake City.
In July, both pleaded guilty to theft of federal and tribal property and trafficking in stolen artifacts, then quickly surrendered two moving vans worth of the family’s artifacts.
On Wednesday, 59-year-old Jeanne Redd was sentenced on seven felony convictions and her 37-year-old daughter on three felony counts.
