DENVER—A high-ranking Denver Fire Department officer with nearly 35 years in the service has been promoted to chief.

Jim Sestrich, a district chief in charge of east Denver, was appointed to the top job Wednesday by Mayor John Hickenlooper.

He replaces Nick Nuanes, who retired.

Sestrich joined the department in July 1976 as a firefighter. He has also served as interim chief and deputy chief.

The fire department’s 2008 annual report said it has more than 45 engines, trucks and other vehicles, about 1,000 employees and a budget of about $100 million.
