Denver International Airport officials plan to adapt an existing design for expanding Concourse C into the possible addition of six gates to the west end of Concourse A.

Several years ago, the airport hired Jacobs Engineering Group to design a 10-gate addition to the east side of C, yet uncertainty in the airline industry caused DIA to put construction of new Concourse C gates on hold. Airport officials now believe that expansion — when supportable by market conditions — should occur on A, because it is closest to the terminal and passengers do not have to take the train to get there.

DIA spokesman Jeff Green called Concourse A the airport’s “oceanfront property.”

On Wednesday, the Denver City Council’s economic development committee approved DIA’s request to add $3.5 million and two years to Jacobs’ contract so the company can convert its design for the Concourse C expansion to one for A. By having the design in hand, DIA should be able to add gates to A within 18 months once they are needed. Jeffrey Leib, The Denver Post
