SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Jimmy Clausen threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns, including a 33-yarder to Golden Tate with 5:18 left that led Notre Dame to a 33-30 victory over Michigan State on Saturday.
Kyle McCarthy intercepted a pass by Michigan State’s Kirk Cousins at the 4 with 57 seconds left as the Irish held on to beat the Spartans in Notre Dame Stadium for the first time since 1993.
The Irish were coming off a loss at Michigan the week before that put pressure back on coach Charlie Weis, who is 31-22 in his fifth season.
“It’s a big win for Notre Dame, it’s not a big win for Charlie Weis,” Weis said. “These kids fought their butts off, and I’m happy for them.”
Iowa 27, Arizona 17
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Hawkeyes freshman Adam Robinson rushed for a career-high 101 yards and two TDs, and Iowa (3-0) held Arizona to just eight first downs. Iowa plays next week at No. 5 Penn State.
N. Illinois 28, Purdue 21
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Me’co Brown ran for 150 yards, and Northern Illinois beat a Big Ten team for the first time since 1988. NIU, a Mid-American Conference school, entered the game 1-32-1 against the Big Ten.
Kentucky 31, Louisville 27
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Derrick Locke returned a kickoff 100 yards for a TD and ran for another score for the Wildcats’ third victory against the Cardinals. A fumbled kickoff return set up Kentucky’s final score. Louisville (1-1) had taken the lead by forcing three consecutive turnovers.
Army 24, Ball State 17
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Donovan Travis came up with two pivotal interceptions in the fourth quarter to make Army a winning team — something that could rarely be said about the Black Knights in recent seasons. Travis returned his second interception 18 yards for the go-ahead TD.
Pitt 27, Navy 14
PITTSBURGH — Dion Lewis and Ray Graham each scored, and Pitt quickly turned a bizarre failed punt by Navy into a pivotal touchdown. Navy (1-2), which led the nation in rushing the last four seasons, never got much offense going and was held to 129 yards on the ground, only 3 yards more than Pitt.
