SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd underwent surgery Sunday for a broken left collarbone and is likely out for the rest of the regular season.

Coach Charlie Weis said there is a chance Floyd could be back if the Irish go to a bowl game.

Floyd, who went into the game second in the nation in receiving yards at 160 a game, was injured falling to the ground trying to make a touchdown catch. Floyd has 13 catches for 358 and five TDs.

Weis also said he expects quarterback Jimmy Clausen to play Saturday against Purdue. Clausen injured his right foot when he was sacked in the second quarter.

• South Florida senior quarterback Matt Grothe will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

• In a late game Saturday, Phillip Payne caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Omar Clayton with 36 seconds left to give UNLV a 34-33 win over visiting Hawaii.

• Southern California dropped nine spots and out of the top 10 to No. 12 in the Associated Press college football poll and Washington (No. 24) moved into the rankings for the first time in six years.

Sparks advance

SEATTLE — Candace Parker scored 22 points and keyed a second-quarter run that led the Los Angeles Sparks over the Seattle Storm 75-64 in the deciding third game of the WNBA Western Conference semifinals.

The Sparks advanced to play the winner of the Phoenix-San Antonio series for the conference championship. The Mercury and Silver Stars play Game 3 tonight in Phoenix.

Pau Gasol had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Spain to an 85-63 win over Serbia in the final of the European basketball championship in Katowice, Poland.

U.S. sprinters Tyson Gay and Carmelita Jeter flirted with history at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix. Gay ran the second fastest men’s 100 meters ever, winning in 9.69 seconds. Jeter won the women’s 100 in 10.64 to become the second-fastest woman of all time.

Ryan Hall became the first American-born runner to win the Philadelphia Distance Run since 1986. The top-ranked U.S. marathoner finished the 13.1-mile race in 1 hour, 1 minute and 52 seconds. Catherine Ndereba, the sister of Sammy Ndereba, won her seventh women’s title but first since 2002.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored two second-half goals to help the Columbus Crew rally for a 2-2 tie against the host Chicago Fire.

Cory McClenathan (top fuel) and Robert Hight (funny car) shot up the playoff rankings by winning their first races of 2009 at the NHRA Carolinas Nationals at zMax Dragway.

• Ventura won the Woodbine Mile to become the first female to win the $1 million race at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto. The win gave Ventura an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Nov. 7 at Santa Anita.

• Two-time Olympian Ryan Lochte is USA Swimming’s athlete of the year for winning five medals (four golds) at the world championships. Michael Phelps was honored with the performance of the year.
