Pint-sized music lovers can experience the excitement of a brass band today at the Denver Brass “Tiny Tots Love Music” concert for kids.
The show is part of the Denver Brass Discover Series concerts aimed at introducing youngsters to live music.
“With music and art, you have to start really young,” says Kim Zeschin, Denver Brass marketing director. “We introduce it slowly and with a lot of fun, so that kids can experience the magic and imagination that comes with music.”
Today’s show, recommended for youngsters ages 2-4, runs for approximately 50 minutes and includes plenty of interactive opportunities designed to accommodate squirmy tots.
“We do a lot of music-relation activities, where music is paired with movements,” Zeschin says. During each song, a narrator will lead the kids through marches, clapping, finger-snapping and foot-stomping. And at the end of the show, kids are invited to participate in a “kazoo chorus.”
During the show, The Denver Brass Quintet, which includes two trumpets, a trombone, a tuba and a French horn, will perform fun, familiar tunes. Songs such as “Skater’s Waltz,” “St. Louis Blues,” Sesame Street’s “Rubber Ducky,” a Disney medley and a circus march, will appeal to the youngsters while changing up the tempo several times.
After the performance, the musicians will conduct a brief show-and-tell with the audience to invite questions from curious kiddos. Concertgoers also leave with a pamphlet filled with ideas for musical games to play at home.
“We really want kids and parents to not just come to the concert, but become a part of the concert,” Zeschin says.
Since the average supporter of The Denver Brass tends to be between 50 and 80 years old, reaching kids and young parents is important to the organization.
“We are trying to go after a whole new audience,” Zeschin says.
Though the kids’ concerts have been a hit — the last Tiny Tots concert drew 270 patrons — simply listening to different kinds of music is not enough for kids to truly learn to love and appreciate it.
“Music is being taken out of the educational system,” Zeschin says. “So it’s really up to us to breed a new generation of musicians.”
