BOULDER, Colo.—Boulder residents opposed to the city regulating the size of houses want to put ordinances affecting property values to a public vote.

The group “Leave My Home Alone” is working with an attorney on proposals for next year’s ballot, including changing the city charter to require that ordinances with a significant impact on property use or value go to a public vote.

Another proposal would repeal an ordinance expected to win approval soon. The ordinance would restrict the size of a house in proportion to the lot size.

The homeowners’ group says they’re not trying to micromanage land-use decisions, but need a way to protect themselves against intrusive regulations.

Councilman Macon Cowles, a backer of the new house-size regulations, says a lot of study went into the proposal.
