Jane C. Harper, a journalist and historian of Colorado newspapers, has died at the age of 83. A resident of Elizabeth and formerly of Aurora, she died Sept. 17.
Jane Campbell Chamberlain was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Albert Lea, Minn. She began her journalism career at Albert Lea High School and graduated from the University of Minnesota after attending the University of Colorado as a freshman.
In Colorado she worked for the Walsenburg World-Independent, the Gunnison News-Champion and the Aurora Star. In 1960, she became editor of the Colorado Republican Party’s weekly Colorado Trumpet. She held that post for 12 years and won numerous press awards.
She joined the staff of the Colorado Press Association in 1978. In 1988, she began compiling a history of Colorado newspapers. The press association members elected her to honorary life membership in 1992.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph J. Harper; two daughters, Jennifer Rowe of Aurora and Megan Harper-Ramsey of Elizabeth; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
