WASHINGTON — U.S. intelligence officials said Friday that they have known about a newly disclosed Iranian nuclear facility for several years — possibly as early as 2006 — and that its dimensions and design all but rule out a civilian nuclear purpose.

The officials said the covert site is designed to hold as many as 3,000 centrifuges, enough to provide fissile material for a single nuclear weapon each year.

The facility is “deep underground,” a senior U.S. intelligence official said, built inside a mountain on a heavily guarded compound.
