DENVER—A state report is critical of a Denver hospital for not providing enough oversight for a smaller facility where it sent a patient who died after a medication error.

The Colorado health department says St. Joseph Hospital failed to ensure that Colorado Orthopaedic and Surgical Hospital “met acceptable standards of care.”

The orthopedic hospital has closed.

The health department ordered St. Joseph to submit a correction plan.

St. Joseph’s chief medical officer, Dr. Lisa Kettering, told The Denver Post in Friday’s editions that “We have a new standard to reach.”

She says the hospital realizes it has a responsibility for patients beyond its own walls.

At least two lawsuits have been filed over the orthopedic hospital, one by the family of the patient who died.
