A MoneyGram International Inc. unit was told by a jury to pay $16.5 million to Douglas County-based Western Union Co. for infringing a patented system for transferring money by phone.
A federal jury in Austin, Texas, on Thursday found that MoneyGram’s FormFree system used three Western Union patents that cover a system for staging money transfers through a call center and completing the transactions at an agent location.
