SAN DIEGO — Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington was knocked out of Sunday’s game against the Chargers with an injury to his right shoulder.

The Dolphins didn’t know the extent of the injury and Pennington will be examined today.

Pennington was hurt on a hit by linebacker Kevin Burnett after throwing an incomplete pass on third-and-7 from the Dolphins 40.

While with the New York Jets, Pennington missed three games with a shoulder injury in 2004, had offseason surgery, then injured the shoulder again in the third game in 2005, missing the remainder of the year.

“I’ve worked extremely hard and overcome a lot of adversity and been able to play when people said I couldn’t play anymore,” Pennington said.

Browns bench Quinn, turn to Andersen.

After Baltimore held the Browns to 78 yards while building a 20-0 halftime lead, Cleveland coach Eric Mangini pulled quarterback Brady Quinn in favor of Derek Anderson.

“I thought that at that point D.A. might be able to give us a spark,” Mangini said. The Browns went on to lose 34-3.

Quinn went 6-for-8 for 34 yards and an interception. Anderson, who lost his starting job to Quinn last year, was 11-for-19 for 92 yards and three interceptions.

Mangini wasn’t ready to decide who will start next week against Cincinnati. “I’ll make the decision early (this) week,” he said.

• Players union spokesman George Atallah said the NFLPA has filed a formal grievance over a $1,701 fine Mangini assessed against one of his players for not paying the hotel bill for a $3 bottle of water.

Colts’ Freeney to get MRI.

Indianapolis’ career sacks leader, defensive end Dwight Freeney, said he will be getting an MRI after injuring his right quadriceps in the third quarter against Arizona. He said the injury occurred on a play in which he was held by a blocker.

Bears thin at middle linebacker.

Chicago was down to its third middle linebacker when Hunter Hillenmeyer left their 25-19 victory at Seattle with a rib injury. Third-year veteran Nick Roach moved inside to replace Hillenmeyer, who became the starter after Brian Urlacher was lost for the season. The Associated Press
