“Shrink”
“Doctor, heal thyself” may be the saying, but in this ensemble-driven drama, L.A. psychiatrist Dr. Henry Carter has settled on the less noble “self-medicate thyself.” At times, this roundelay of disordered personalities (the aging actress, the alcoholic star, the raging agent, etc.) feels overly familiar. But Kevin Spacey’s performance is droll and wounded. Keke Palmer gives a quietly pent-up performance as his patient, a woman/child enamored of movies and angry at everything else and everyone else. “Away We Go”
We have our protagonists — a rootless, pregnant couple feeling their way into the world of adult responsibility on a road trip to scout the best environment in which to raise their child. And yet as the ambivalent pair visit Miami, Montreal and elsewhere in search of their destiny, nothing resembling a fleshed-out movie emerges. While the film is amusing in short bursts and boasts some sharp dialogue, it’s weak on plot and drama. With an excellent Maggie Gyllenhaal, brassy, hare-brained Allison Janney, comedy champs Jeff Daniels and Catherine O’Hara, and John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph as the pregnant couple. “Filth and Wisdom”
Madonna’s directorial debut features A.K., a Ukrainian rocker who pays the rent on his London flat by working as a gay S&M call boy. His roomies are Holly, a ballerina moonlighting as a stripper, and Juliette, a pill-popping pharmacist who dreams of helping children in Africa. The filth is scrubbed clean — A.K. barely touches his customers — and there’s not an ounce of wisdom in these shallow characters. Not even the excellent Richard E. Grant, as a blind poet, can save this false, empty film. Not rated. 1 hour, 24 minutes. Rafer Guzman, Newsday
