FORT CARSON, Colo.—The Army says 110 soldiers have committed suicide in the first eight months of the year, including eight at Fort Carson in Colorado.
Fort Carson’s top brass and senior sergeants met Tuesday at the post outside Colorado Springs to discuss efforts to prevent suicide.
Florida State University psychologist Thomas Joiner told the group that suicides he has studied have three common factors: loneliness, fearlessness and a feeling of worthlessness.
Joiner says Army training fosters a fearlessness about death. But he says commanders can battle loneliness and feelings of worthlessness by building close-knit teams and giving troops a sense of purpose.
