BOULDER, Colo.—Boulder police and other officials don’t think the return of the city’s “Mall Crawl” Halloween celebration would be much of a treat.

Police Chief Mark Beckner and other community leaders are trying to prevent revival of the event that used to draw thousands to Boulder’s downtown pedestrian mall on Halloween night. They say the result was drunken brawls, congested traffic and property damage.

Two Boulder residents using Facebook have tried to renew interest in the celebration that had its heyday in the 1980s. That prompted city and business leaders to issue a statement Thursday saying the mall crawl is unsafe and could cost the city $40,000.

Beckner said a meeting Wednesday with one of the event’s proponents “was very productive,” but police are preparing for the possibility of large crowds Halloween night.
