NEW YORK — Tigers pitcher Jeremy Bonderman has been suspended for three games for intentionally hitting Minnesota’s Delmon Young on a knee with a pitch.
Bonderman, who also was fined, appealed the penalty assessed Friday, delaying the start of the suspension.
Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon, who was serving as acting manager after Jim Leyland’s ejection, was suspended for one game and fined because Bonderman acted intentionally following warnings to both teams Thursday.
Minnesota pitcher Jose Mijares was fined for intentionally throwing behind Adam Everett. Leyland and catcher Gerald Laird were fined for arguing with umpire Angel Hernandez.
Towers on way out
SAN DIEGO — Kevin Towers, the longest-tenured general manager in the major leagues, is being fired by the Padres.
Towers, in his 14th season, said he can’t comment on his situation. He is under contract through next season.
The Padres are expected to make an official announcement today.
