Better Than Ezra singer Kevin Griffin and his band proved nostalgic draws for Denver last Friday. Photos by Jennifer Cohen.
After 20 years as a band, played to a sold-out crowd at Denver’s venerable on Friday night. Lead singer Kevin Griffin’s familiar voice was comforting and nostalgic, presenting an eclectic mix of songs from the band’s seven studio albums. Standing in line, it seemed most of the 30-something-and-over crowd were excited to be on a “date night” with their significant others. And while hard-pressed to find more than a handful of concert-goers who legally couldn’t buy beer for the show, the ones there seemed to know and love every lyric.
“Lifetime,” from the band’s 2005 album “Before the Robots,” in particular had everyone singing. The chemistry between Griffin, bassist Tom Drummond and drummer Michael Jerome was clear and animated. It was heartening to see that after 20 years — and some recent member changes — BTE can still bring it. — Jennifer Cohen
