Forty-three custom-crafted bras on display in Denver’s ArtDistrict on Santa Fe this month are offering a different kind of consumer support.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, designers, TV anchors, artists, moms and students contributed to the first-ever Bra Art exhibit. The show, which benefits breast-cancer research, hangs through the end of October.
The eclectic collection includes a bra painted with koi fish, one that mimics the Alps, and a “Pop Art” bra complete with soda can tops.
“It’s fun and whimsical,” said Joni Goheen of Lakewood, mother of the Bra Art brainchild. After her three nieces, ages 18, 20 and 22, were diagnosed with breast cancer, Goheen wanted to come up with something new that would reflect her nieces’ positive attitudes and outlooks on life.
Her contribution to the show is Twin Peaks, a bra decorated like ski slopes.
More than 500 people showed up for Bra Art’s inaugural reception Friday, hinting that others are looking for the same sort of whimsical approach to the illness and recovery.
Though the fundraiser is new to take flight, Bra Art has already secured space in galleries around Denver for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 2010.
“We’re really excited about being a part of something that involves the whole art district,” said Rachel Gomez, gallery director at Reed Photo-Art Gallery. “As a community, we like to support causes like this. Hopefully next year we will double the bras we host.”
The bras are being auctioned. The funds raised will be donated to the Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
